Programming 360º | Things Your Boss Expects You to Know as a PD
A few decades ago at a Brad Burkhart Christian Media seminar, a paper was handed out detailing “A Program Directors 60-Hour Workweek.” Designed to be more than a list of what a PD ought to accomplish every seven days, it was meant to show that the work of a successful Program Director requires them to be engaged more than “9 to 5, Monday through Friday.” Initially, many of the fledgling PD’s in the room balked at the notion that they would have to be engaged outside of a normal workweek. Today, all of us realize that 60-hours a week may be just the beginning, because a great PD is always listening, always planning, and always evaluating. For the winning programmer, it’s got to be an every day of the year proposition. Your job is going to be different every day, but just about every day you’ll need to concern yourself with the following:
- Playing the “hits”
- Coaching your communicators
- Listening to your listeners
- 360-degree management
- Leveraging new media
And those are just the highlights. Some days will find you concentrating on one of those things more than the others. There may be times when you’ll spend almost the entire day wishing you could work on the others more than the one that you seem to be “stuck” on. They’re all important, so how do you do them ALL well?
We are here to help. This program is designed to provide you with a complete full circle view of the things your boss expects you to know as a PD.
